Pampean streams and rivers show distinct characteristics compared to other fluvial systems of the world such as the lack of riparian forest, low current velocities, elevated nutrient levels even in the less impacted systems and high biodiversity. Due to their particular features, they are interesting systems for testing some hypotheses on the structure and function of fluvial systems. However, in the last decade, urbanization expansion and agricultural intensification in the region are impacting on the ecological quality of these ecosystems.
